Community Garden

Our Community Garden is located on Alba Street between Sue Barnett and Chamboard. The mission of the garden is to serve the community by donating organically grown vegetables to local food pantries. Volunteer gardeners meet weekly on Wednesday mornings, weather permitting. New volunteers are welcome with no prior gardening experience needed. Future plans are to hold additional workdays on Saturday mornings. Groups such as Girl and Boy Scout troops looking for service projects are encouraged to become involved with the garden. Current needs of the garden include fence and gate repairs, a drip irrigation system and additional tree trimming.

Recent garden improvements have been aided by Girl Scout troop #122224, Astro Fence, My Trees Houston and Lowe’s. The garden receives ongoing support from the Garden Oaks Civic Club, Shepherd Park Plaza Garden Club, San Jacinto Environmental and donations from volunteer gardeners.

The garden was established in 1986 by former residents Jan Koenig and Bob Gabrych. When Koenig moved from the area, Beth Galiano, Harris County Master Gardener, took over duties managing the garden with help from numerous volunteers through the years, including Dr. Bob Randall of Urban Harvest.
