Garden Oaks Citizens on Patrol (GOCOP)

DOING OUR BEST FOR A BETTER COMMUNITY

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A PATROLLER

GO COP is a volunteer group of Garden Oaks neighbors who patrol our streets in vehicles equipped with CB radios or cellular phones. GO COP wants to provide a service for our neighbors; a service you can rely upon when you go on vacation, to work every day or simply to the grocery store. We ask that every resident in Garden Oaks become aware of who lives around them and be aware of their normal routine. That way you are more apt to recognize a stranger and identify suspicious activity.

We need a large number of patrollers to ensure the neighborhood is well covered and also to give each other an opportunity for time off from patrolling. You can be scheduled to patrol in your area or throughout the entire neighborhood. We will accommodate your desired patrol time if possible. We can all feel better about our neighborhood's safety knowing that patrolling is a proven deterrent to crime.

CB Radios are used as the primary source of communication while patrolling. If you don't own one, the program will provide one for you. While patrolling you will be assigned a base station operator to monitor your safety and liaison between you and the police department if they are needed. Also available is a cellular phone, and of course, you are free to use your own cellular phone or CB equipment if you have it. Regular check-in with your assigned base is required while patrolling. The base station operators also record your patrol time and submit a report to the coordinator who files a report with city on a monthly basis. Patrollers using their own cell phones are responsible for reporting their hours to the COP coordinator at the first of every month.

As GO COP is a program run in conjunction with the City of Houston and the Houston Police Department, formal training is required to participate. H.P.D. provides training twice a month at the North Division Command Station located at 9455 W. Montgomery Rd. Training is offered on the second Thursday of each month at 10:00 a.m. and on the fourth Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. Training lasts for about an hour.

Questions should be directed to the COP Coordinator who is listed in the Garden Oaks Gazette with the other committee chairpersons.

Here is how simple it is

1. Sign up and return application
2. Complete H.P.D. training
3. Complete Indoctrination Ride
4. You're on your own
5. Crooks Beware!

Interested in patrolling? Call 713 864 1992 or email.

Please note: If you are having an emergency, you should not call the COP Coordinator first! You should call 911 to report crimes in progress, fires, or a need for an ambulance, or the Precinct One Constable Dispatch to call the Constable.
