Garden Oaks consists of approximately 1400 homes from quaint cottages and charming bungalows to plantation, ranch and traditional style homes. Its deed restrictions with large setbacks give each home larger than usual lot sizes and plenty of space between homes. Located just north of Loop 610's "North Loop," residents of Garden Oaks have easy access to downtown Houston, the Uptown/Galleria area, the Heights, Montrose, and many other parts of Houston. Established in 1937, Garden Oaks is convenient for those who want the amenities and culture of the big city but prefer living on tree-lined streets in a small-town atmosphere. The average sales price of a Garden Oaks home for the first half of 2002 was just over $180,000. This included homes that sold for as little as $100,000 to homes that sold for over $500,000.
