Cattle Queen of Texas addresses GOCC

The Garden Oaks Civic Club will present speaker Susan Reeves as Lizzie Williams, the Cattle Queen of Texas at the June 6th Civic Association meeting held in the Garden Oaks Montessori Magnet School cafeteria at 7 PM.

Come and hear the story of Lizzie who came to Texas with her parents in the 1840s and settled in the Hill Country. She received her early education at her parent’s school the Johnson Institute and later earned a degree in 1859 from the Chappell Hill Female College in Washington County. She began her career as a schoolteacher. Later her older brother, recognizing her math and business skills, asked her to take over his bookkeeping business for cattle ranchers.

She quickly realized that there was money to be made in Texas cattle ranching and purchased land, cattle and even her own brand. She achieved legendary status as the Cattle Queen of Texas and is thought to be the first woman in Texas to ride the Chisholm Trail with her own herd of cattle.

Susan Reeves will bring to life Lizzie’s story. This is a presentation you and your children will not want to miss.

The monthly Civic Club meeting will follow Susan’s presentation
